Dr Oliver Murphy Re-Appointed President of IT Tralee

The Institute of Technology Tralee is pleased to announce the re-appointment of Dr Oliver Murphy as President for another 5 year term. The Chairperson of the Governing Body Mr Lionel Alexander extended his congratulations to Oliver on his appointment and stated that

“The Institute is embarking on some key strategic priorities that will be critical to its success at a regional, national and global level. I look forward to working closely with Oliver, the executive team, and the Governing Body to ensure that we deliver on these priorities”.

Dr Oliver Murphy stated that he was

Delighted and honoured to be re-appointed for another 5 year term and looks forward to working with the Governing Body, staff and students and all our stakeholders to ensure that the Institute continues to grow and develop and is a key enabler of economic, social and cultural development. My key priority is to see the establishment of the Munster Technological University in collaboration with our colleagues in CIT. A University Campus in Tralee adjacent to the Kerry Technology Park will significantly contribute to the overall economic development of not only Kerry but the wider region”.

Dr Murphy also stated that the Institute will be launching its new Strategic Plan 2017-2021 in mid-September. “This plan outlines ambitious goals and targets and I am confident that these will be met given the professionalism and expertise of all our staff and the excellent relationship we have with our stakeholders including our student body. Over this time frame we intend to double the number of International fee paying students studying at the Institute and to increase the number of part time students registered on on-line programmes by 50%. We intend to increase our total student enrolment by 13%. We also have developed a Campus Development Plan which will see all our activities delivered on our North Campus in Dromtacker.”

A native of Limerick City, Dr. Murphy joined IT Tralee in 1994 as a Lecturer in Mathematics and Statistics at the School of Business and Social Studies. In 1996 he was appointed Head of Department of Business and Social Studies, a position he held for a five-year period. In 2001, he joined the senior executive management team of the Institute after his appointment to the position of College Registrar.

Dr. Murphy completed his B.Ed in Mathematics and Education at Mary Immaculate College and graduated with an MA in Mathematics and Statistics from UCC in 1986. He was conferred with his Ph.D in Statistics from UCC in 1995.
